How to Select a Hydraulic Scissor Hoist for a Dump Trailer?

    چهاردهم جولای 2026

Selecting a hydraulic scissor hoist for a dump trailer is not as simple as choosing a kit marked “6 ton,” “8 ton,” or “10 ton.” The correct hoist must match the trailer body dimensions, payload, load distribution, required dumping angle, mounting position, hydraulic cylinder, and power unit.

A hoist that is too small may struggle to start lifting when the trailer is fully loaded. An oversized system may increase cost, weight, and installation difficulty without providing a practical advantage.

For trailer manufacturers, repair workshops, distributors, and conversion projects, the following factors should be reviewed before selecting a hydraulic scissor hoist kit.

    1. Understand How a Scissor Hoist Works

A hydraulic scissor hoist uses a hydraulic cylinder to open a mechanical scissor structure installed between the trailer frame and the dump body.

As the cylinder extends, the scissor mechanism pushes the body upward around the rear hinge. The mechanism changes the cylinder’s linear force into lifting movement.

The required lifting force is normally highest at the beginning of the cycle because the dump body is almost horizontal. At this point, the mechanical leverage available from the hoist is relatively limited. Once the body starts rising, the load gradually shifts toward the rear hinge and lifting usually becomes easier.

This is why the initial lifting capacity is one of the most important considerations when selecting a hoist.

    2. Do Not Select the Hoist by Payload Alone

Trailer payload is important, but it is not the only weight the hoist must lift.

    The selection should consider:

    مورد توضیحات
Payload Maximum material carried by the trailer
وزن بدنه تخلیه Weight of the body, floor, side panels and tailgate
Additional components Covers, ramps, toolboxes or other accessories
Load distribution Whether the material is evenly distributed or concentrated
Safety margin Additional capacity for operating variations

For example, a trailer carrying 6 tons of material may require the hoist to lift more than 6 tons when the dump body and installed accessories are included.

The type of material also matters. Sand, soil, gravel, demolition waste, agricultural products and landscaping materials do not always discharge in the same way. Wet or compacted materials may remain inside the body longer and create a higher initial load.

Therefore, a hoist should not be selected only by matching its nominal rating to the stated trailer payload.

    3. Measure the Dump Body Length

Dump body length directly affects the lifting torque required.

A longer body generally places the combined center of gravity farther from the rear hinge. This increases the force needed to begin lifting, even when the total weight remains the same.

    ابعاد مهم شامل:

    • Internal dump body length
    • Overall body length
    • Distance from the rear hinge to the front of the body
    • Rear overhang behind the hinge
    • Location of the estimated loaded center of gravity

Two trailers with the same payload may require different hoist models when their body lengths and hinge locations are different.

The supplier should review the actual body dimensions instead of recommending a model based only on tonnage.

    4. Confirm the Rear Hinge Position

The dump body rotates around the rear hinge, so hinge position has a major influence on hoist performance.

A hinge positioned too far forward or too far backward can change:

    • Initial lifting force
    • Final dumping angle
    • Load on the trailer frame
    • Stability during unloading
    • Required cylinder stroke
    • Hoist installation position

The hinge assembly must also be strong enough to support the fully loaded body during lifting and unloading.

When requesting a hoist recommendation, provide the distance between the hinge center and the main trailer frame reference points. A side-view drawing is especially useful.

    5. Determine the Required Dump Angle

Common dumping applications may require different final body angles depending on the material and trailer design.

Materials that flow easily may discharge at a lower angle. Sticky soil, wet sand or compacted waste may require a greater angle for complete unloading.

    The achievable angle depends on:

    • Hoist geometry
    • Mounting position
    • Cylinder stroke
    • Dump body length
    • Rear hinge position
    • Clearance between the hoist and trailer frame

Choosing a longer cylinder does not automatically guarantee a better dumping angle. The full geometry must be checked to ensure that the scissor mechanism does not overextend or interfere with the frame.

The required dump angle should therefore be confirmed before the mounting brackets are welded.

    6. Check the Available Installation Space

A hydraulic scissor hoist must fit between the trailer frame and the underside of the dump body when fully retracted.

    Measure the available:

    • Frame width
    • Cross-member spacing
    • Closed installation height
    • Distance between the frame and dump body
    • Space for the hydraulic cylinder
    • Clearance around axles, brake lines and wiring
    • Space for the power unit and oil tank

The hoist should not interfere with suspension components, tires, electrical cables or hydraulic hoses throughout the complete lifting cycle.

For existing trailers, photographs and measurements of the underside are usually required. For a new trailer design, the hoist should be included during the frame design stage rather than added after the structure has been finalized.

    7. Match the Hydraulic Cylinder to the Hoist

The hydraulic cylinder determines the available pushing force and influences the lifting speed and final angle.

    Important cylinder parameters include:

    پارامتر Why It Matters
قطر سوراخ Determines cylinder output force
قطر میل Affects strength and buckling resistance
سکته‌ی مغزی Determines scissor opening travel
طول بسته Must fit the retracted hoist structure
فشار کاری Must match the hydraulic power unit
Mounting type Must fit the hoist pivot points
    Port position Affects hose installation
Surface protection Important for outdoor trailer use

The cylinder should not be replaced with another model simply because the stroke appears similar. Different bore sizes, pin dimensions, closed lengths or pressure ratings can change the performance and safety of the entire system.

The cylinder and hoist structure should be selected as one matched assembly.

    8. Select the Correct Hydraulic Power Unit

Most small and medium dump trailers use a DC hydraulic power unit powered by the trailer or tow vehicle battery.

    Common options include:

    • DC 12V for many light and medium trailer applications
    • DC 24V for certain commercial vehicles and larger systems
    • Power up and gravity down circuits
    • Power up and power down circuits
    • Wired pendant control
    • Optional wireless remote control

The power unit must provide sufficient pressure to lift the load and enough flow to achieve an acceptable lifting speed.

Pressure and flow perform different functions:

    • فشار determines the available cylinder force.
    • جریان determines how quickly the cylinder moves.

A high-flow pump may lift faster, but it also requires greater motor power and battery capacity. A small reservoir may reduce installation space but must still contain enough oil for the full cylinder stroke.

The motor power, pump displacement, relief valve setting and tank capacity should be calculated according to the selected cylinder.

    9. Consider the Duty Cycle

A trailer used occasionally for landscaping work has different operating requirements from a commercial trailer that performs repeated dumping cycles throughout the day.

    The supplier should understand:

    • Number of cycles per day
    • Time between cycles
    • Typical load condition
    • دمای محیط
    • Working environment
    • Required lifting speed
    • Maximum continuous motor running time

Frequent operation can create more heat in the motor, pump and hydraulic oil. For higher-duty applications, a larger motor, reservoir or different power unit configuration may be required.

    10. Review Frame Strength and Mounting Points

The hoist transfers concentrated loads into the trailer frame and dump body.

Mounting brackets should be connected to structurally suitable cross-members. Installing the hoist onto thin floor plates or unsupported sections can cause distortion, cracking or poor lifting alignment.

The trailer structure should be checked for:

    • Frame section strength
    • Cross-member position
    • Bracket welding area
    • Load distribution
    • Rear hinge reinforcement
    • Resistance to twisting
    • Clearance during full extension

The left and right sides of the hoist must remain aligned. Frame distortion or inaccurate bracket positioning can create side loading on the cylinder and pivot pins.

For OEM projects, it is advisable to confirm the mounting layout before production welding begins.

    11. Include Safety Components

A hydraulic system should not be the only component supporting a raised dump body during inspection or maintenance.

A complete system should include or allow for:

    • Mechanical safety prop
    • Secure rear hinge
    • Properly sized pivot pins
    • Pin retention devices
    • Pressure relief protection
    • Hose routing protection
    • پایین آوردن کنترل شده
    • Clearly marked operating instructions

Operators should never work under a raised dump body without engaging the mechanical safety support.

Safety devices must also be positioned where they can be used without placing the operator inside a hazardous area.

    12. Decide Whether You Need a Hoist Assembly or a Complete Kit

Hydraulic scissor hoists can be supplied in several configurations.

    A basic assembly may include:

    • ساختار بالابر قیچی
    • سیلندر هیدرولیک
    • پین‌های محور
    • براکت های نصب

A complete hydraulic kit may also include:

    • DC hydraulic power unit
    • مخزن روغن
    • Control pendant
    • شلنگ‌های هیدرولیک
    • Hose fittings
    • Body hinges
    • Safety prop
    • Mounting hardware
    • Optional wireless remote

For trailer manufacturers, purchasing a matched complete kit can reduce component compatibility problems and simplify installation.

However, repair companies may only need a replacement cylinder, hose set or power unit. The required supply scope should be confirmed during quotation.

    Information Required for Hoist Selection

To recommend a suitable hydraulic scissor hoist, provide the following information:

    Required Information Example
    حداکثر بار مجاز 6,000 kg
    وزن بدنه تخلیه 1,200 kg
    Dump body length 4,200 mm
    Dump body width 2,000 mm
    Rear hinge position Drawing required
    Rear overhang 300 mm
    زاویه تخلیه مورد نیاز ۴۵°
    Available mounting width 800 میلی‌متر
    Power supply DC 12V
    Control type Wired pendant
فرکانس عملیاتی 10 cycles per day
Material carried Sand, gravel or waste

A side-view trailer drawing, underside photographs and frame dimensions will make the selection more accurate.

    Common Selection Mistakes

Several common mistakes can lead to poor lifting performance:

    • Selecting only according to trailer payload
    • Ignoring the weight of the dump body
    • Failing to consider body length
    • Installing the rear hinge in the wrong position
    • Choosing a cylinder based only on stroke
    • Using an unmatched hydraulic power unit
    • Setting the relief pressure too high
    • Ignoring the trailer frame strength
    • Welding mounting brackets before confirming the geometry
    • Operating without a mechanical safety prop

These issues can often be prevented by reviewing the complete trailer design before ordering the hoist.

    نتیجه‌گیری

The correct hydraulic scissor hoist should be selected as part of a complete trailer lifting system rather than as an isolated component.

Payload, body weight, body length, center of gravity, hinge position, dumping angle, installation space, cylinder size, hydraulic pressure, pump flow and frame strength must all be considered together.

AiSoar supplies hydraulic scissor hoist assemblies and complete dump trailer hydraulic kits for approximately 3–12 ton applications. Available components can include the hoist structure, matched hydraulic cylinder, DC 12V or 24V power unit, hoses, fittings, hinges, safety supports and control options.
